About Resources on OldHouses.com

Whether you live in an old house, are thinking of buying one, or are interested in learning more about them, you will appreciate the vast amount of information, books, references, and historic public spaces available to suit your fancy.

As much as we love the past, one great thing about modern life is the Internet, and the access it offers to the whole world of information, experience, products and services, including the world of historic buildings.

By all means use search engines, youtube and other Internet sites to locate resources. Our goal is to collect the best of them here. If you know of a resource we should list, please let us know.

A World of Resources

is at your fingertips. For a complete index, visit the main resources page, but here is a general breakdown:

Suppliers and Services

These include for-profit companies that offer products, or services, or both, to the old house market. Look here for antiques, architectural salvage, and reproductions of historic products.

Organizations

Look here for (mostly) non-profit organizations that relate to old houses, or old house living. We've listed official national and state government organizations in this section, but you will also find many other organizations at the national, state and local levels. These include many local neighborhood organizations.

Style Guide

Figuring out the style of an historic house or building can be tricky. We've created a guide to the most common styles of old houses you will see in North America.

The Best of The Internet

The Internet is chock-full of web sites, videos, forums and all kinds of useful information for old house lovers -- if you know where to find it. This section is a great place to start.

Old Houses You Can Visit

The Internet is great, but if you like to see old houses in the flesh, we maintain a list of Bed and Breakfast Inns, Historic Museums and Rentable Historic Venues. All of these are open to the public, and many are free to visit.

Don't Forget the Archives

Our old house archives are actually in a separate section, but they offer a terrific resource for research and inspiration. You might even find your own house there.

Where We Get Resources.

Most resources are submitted by the businesses, organizations and individuals that offer them. However, we spend a lot of time researching resources and add many of them ourselves.

There is no cost to add a resource to our site. Except for links to Amazon products, we do not profit from your interaction with the resources you find on our site, although some of them do pay a bit to feature their resources on our site.

We Welcome Your Old House Resource.

If you have an old-house related resource to share with old house lovers, we invite you to submit it to our site. There is no cost to submit a resource, but we do offer advertising services if you are interested.

All resources submitted must be related to old houses or their welfare, or to old-house living. We reserve the right to respectfully decline your submission.
