Wills N. Hackney House

Front
Front
This house was built by the president and manager of the Hackney Tire Company, Willis N. Hackney. The Hackneys lived here until their deaths in the early 1970s. It had fallen into disrepair when purchased by the present owners. They remodeled the kitchen, refinished the floors and restored it to a wonderful family home. The upstairs consists of two large bedrooms, each with an ensuite bath. One also includes a sitting room. This house is within walking distance of downtown and the county courthouse. The house has been used as a law office and is zoned office and residential. It is located in the Old Wilson Historic District and is adjoined by two homes that have also been restored.

More about this house:

2010 tax bill: $2143.00

This is a lovely house. A professional couple with a son in middle school have lived there for the last eight years. There is an engineering office across the street and a vacant lot to the left/east of the property. The house to the right/west has been renovated and is currently rented to some young women who attend Barton College.

There is parking on the street and in the backyard. On the weekend, I would imagine that parking in the engineers' parking lot across the street would be allowed so the house could be used for community gatherings and events. It would be perfect for a home office. There is a large back entry hall on which the downstairs bedroom opens that could be used for meeting clients. The sunroom also has outside entrance and could be used to meet clients.

The house is in move-in condition. The gas pak that heats and cools the downstairs was new in 2003. The heat pump for upstairs is in the attic and is probably 10-15 years old. The attic is floored with pull down stairs. The laundry is on the enclosed back porch off the kitchen. There is a wonderful old oak tree in the back yard that may be as old as 300 years and is protected by covenants. The house is on a moderately busy street with sidewalks and is within walking distance of the train and bus stations, 4-6 blocks.

Wilson has a small liberal arts college with a new performing arts theatre as well as a restored theater downtown which hosts concerts and plays. This house is in the Old Wilson Historic District which has an active homeowners association. Wilson has a population of about 50,000 people and has most chain restaurants, a J. C. Penney's, a Belks's (department store), a Wal-Mart, Lowes (Home Improvement) and Target. There is a hospital here and a regional hospital with medical school in Greenville, NC which is about 35 miles away. Raleigh, the state capital is about a 45 minute drive away and it is an hour's drive to the Raleigh-Durham airport.
