HISTORY OF O'NEILL MANSION
James O'Neil was an attorney and nephew of Neillsville.. He moved to Neillsville in 1870 and built the O'Neill Mansion in 1874. Originally a pure Victorian-Italianate style, he added the wrap around porch in 1900. James O'Neil served as the Clark County Judge and eventually became a Wisconsin State Senator. After James O'Neil died in 1929, the large Mansion was purchased by a group of Doctors who converted it to Neillsville City Hospital. It served in this capacity from 1931 to 1954 until the new city hospital was completed. Since 1954 the Mansion served as doctor's office, a nursing home and was finally converted into 4 apartment units. In the late 1980's Don Jones, a mortician for the Gesche Funeral Home bought the Mansion and restored and renovated it. It has passed to various owners who have since remodeled and renovated to its current 3 apartment condition. It was purchased by it current owners in 2007 and who have have annually restored and renewed it to its beautiful existing condition.Archived in April, 2011
