More About This House

Frank Wallis and William J. Rogers designed this ”castle-like” home on Edgewood Terrace in 1907. It’s located on the triangle formed by Edgewood Road, Edgewood Terrace, and Highland Avenue. It is reported to be the inspiration for the Yogi Berra comment, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

It was built for Ellis and Adelaide Earle who worked in the precious metals business. He founded the Nipissing Mining Company of Canada, which was one of the world’s largest producers of silver. It was then purchased by Joseph and Julia Aiello in 1946.

The Wedgewood Cafeteria (previously in Montclair) was owned – along with a host of other properties - by Joe, who came to America in the early 1900s by working as a deckhand on a ship. He built up quite an empire here in Montclair. He even bought the Knoll Country Club in Parsippany. He was also the holder of Montclair’s Liquor License #1, which he purchased after Prohibition.

Later, the house was owned by Bob Gaudio, keyboard player and singer for the Four Seasons rock group. He also wrote and/or produced hits for Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Diana Ross, and Roberta Flack. Frank Sinatra and Bob also recorded in the 3rd floor Game Room!

The Castle “at the fork in the road” designed by noted architects Frank Wallis and William J Rogers is awaiting a new owner to complete the restoration. This stone fortress has exquisite natural woodwork, spectacular leaded and stained glass windows, stained glass medallions, gorgeous floors, and exceptional detail throughout.

Formal rooms include a grand Living Room with an elegant fireplace, a banquet-sized Dining Room, and an exquisite Library with original built-ins (all with fireplaces).

The large, updated Kitchen offers stainless steel appliances, a large center island, and seating for 10 people. The Butler’s Pantry has built-ins galore. A coat room and Powder Room complete the 1st floor.

Upstairs the Primary Bedroom has views of the NYC skyline, and a fireplace, and the suite has 2 baths and walk-in closets. There are 4 additional bedrooms on that level and a large Family Room with vaulted ceiling and Laundry.

The 3rd floor features 3 additional Bedrooms, 2 baths, and a large Game Room with vaulted ceiling and original skylights.

On the lower level is an office with a fireplace and Powder Room, a Nanny Suite with a Bath, a mini basketball/hockey enclosure, and a work room. A 1 Bedroom Carriage house and an inground pool are on the grounds.
