History
Stunning, historically preserved, extensively renovated, and one of the recognized “Homes of the Brave” Revolutionary War Patriots of Cumberland County. This home was owned by Waggoneer Peter Smith who joined the Associators of the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment (General Thompson’s Pennsylvania Rifle Battalion), Continental Army on August 13, 1775 and served throughout the war. Peter spent time in Boston, in the Cumberland County Militia between 1777 and 1780. In January of 1778, he was ordered to report to headquarters at Valley Forge where he transported goods by wagon. Between 1780 and 1783, Peter served in Captain James Bell’s 1st Company in the 3rd Battalion. The 1798 tax records for this property show a 40’ x 18’ one-story and a half stone house with six windows and seventy-two lights (window panes) and a 80’ x 30’ stone barn on 240 acres owned by Esther Smith, Peter’s wife. The early house was built over a spring (which is still flowing today) and later raised a half story. A four-bay two-story addition was added in 1831 by Henry Strickler and his wife Barbara (clearly marked with historic plaque), and a final two-story
addition was added in 1949.
As part of Cumberland County’s Historic Preservation Plan to preserve historic resources (Chapter 16), the Henry Strickler house is clearly documented on Page 16-25.
