The Edwards House

How would you like to own a Historical masterpiece, built in the 1870's? Immaculate care has been taken of this beautiful home which still maintains its original charm and character. Early on it was part of the Oswego College for Young Ladies, as well as, the Kansas Military Academy. It is now known as the Edwards House and is on the Kansas State Historical Registry.

This two story brick home features a full length porch over the double door entryway. The entry hall is dominated by the walnut railed staircase that leads to the 2nd floor, with the main living room and parlor on either side of it. Both of these rooms feature fireplaces, hardwood floors and original woodwork.

From the living room, pocket doors separate it from the formal dining room, which opens into the updated kitchen, which features a center isle and plenty of cabinets for storage. Off of the kitchen is an additional work room, utility room and back staircase. Main floor bedroom and bathroom off of the hallway.

The second floor still maintains the original plank flooring with a master suite and 5 additional bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, one of which has a claw foot tub.

The detached garage is connected to a sandstone barn that is older than the house. The barn has been well taken care of, with plenty of storage area. The entire property sits on 1.5 acres on the southern end of Oswego.

History

The residence is a reflection of early growth and development in Oswego and the community’s interest in establishing an educational institution for women. The house and surrounding property are the last remaining vestiges of the Oswego College for Young Ladies, which held classes from 1885 to 1920.

The house was constructed circa 1874 as a private residence. In 1885, the property was deeded to the Oswego College for Young Ladies, which was operated by the Neosho Presbytery. Plagued by enrollment problems, the College closed in 1920 and sold its property to the Kansas Military Academy in 1922.

The property functioned as the military academy’s campus just two years, before it suffered a devastating fire that destroyed the adjacent classroom and dormitory building. The property again became a private residence, owned by N.R. Bickford, who established a large poultry farm there before selling ten years later to Lewis Edwards. At the
time of nomination, the property is owned by a descendant of Edwards.
