About the House
The house was built in 1883 for a wealthy Undersecretary of the Treasury in President Arthur's Administration. It was made for entertaining in grand style and has, in fact, been the venue for many National Geographic Society Christmas parties, among other special events. It's been featured on the Logan Circle Victorian Christmas House Tour and was the location for a Discovery Channel Thanksgiving special. Among the architectural features are 11-foot ceilings with ornate plaster crown moldings, fortress-thick walls, matched gas-lamp style crystal chandeliers, gilded pier mirrors and a sweeping, three-story, mahogany-and-oak-paneled staircase. Oil paintings and antiques from the Romanesque Revival, American Empire, and Eastlake periods grace the generously proportioned parlors and guest rooms. Christmas season visitors see the home decorated as lavishly as the original owners would have done in their day.Comments & Feedback
