The William Chapline House, circa 1789
This beautifully renovated and restored home is located on the Town Square at Sharpsburg, MD, one of the most significant historic rural villages in America. Steeped in history, the stone portion of the home was built in 1789 just after the Revolutionary War, In 1796 the brick two-story ell was added to the rear of the home. The 2 story brick stable was built in the rear of the property about the same time. The home was heavily damaged during the Battle of Antietam. Owner and local physician, Dr. Augustin Biggs, worked tirelessly during and after the battle caring for soldiers in his home office (now the living room). The house has been restored and maintained as appropriate to its historic status. On the National Register of Historic Places, this home is one of the finest, most historic homes in southern Washington County.Archived in August, 2016
