S.M. Jackson House

A historical Victorian dream home! This home was built by brevet General Samuel McCartney Jackson in 1883. Grandfather of actor Jimmy Stewart, founder and President of the Apollo Trust Company, two term state Representative, one term state Senator, and in 1893 PA State Treasurer.

S.M. Jackson served gallantly for 3 years in one of the most engaged units of the Civil War - the 11th Pennsylvania Reserves (40th PA Infantry). With service in battles such as Gaines' Mill, the second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Bethesda Church Jackson rose from captain of the Apollo Independent Blues to regimental colonel. This unheralded unit honored itself with most conspicuous gallantry at the battle of Gettysburg by mounting a bayonet defense of the Wheat Field.

S.M. Jackson’s historic and unique home will just take your breath away from the minute you walk in. This 135 year old Italianate style home has had only three subsequent owners since its construction by S.M. Jackson and retains many original plumbing and lighting fixtures along with original hardware and amazing woodworking craftsmanship.

Home

This beautifully maintained and true to its roots home is large and boasts elements of elegance without ever becoming ostentatious. This house has the potential to be an absolute museum quality showplace but to me and the many guests that have visited over the years it has always exuded an air of warmth and inviting comfort and has been in every way a genuine 'family home'.

History

This home features the first indoor bathroom in the Borough of Apollo which just recently celebrated its 200th anniversary. The bathroom still retains its original plumbing fixtures with one fixture's decal using the turn of the century spelling of 'Pittsburg' when we briefly dropped the trailing 'h'.

Apollo lies along the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal system that once connected Pittsburgh and Philadelphia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_Canal). A complex system of locks and dams where canal boats were pulled out of the Ohio River drainage on the western side, set onto wheels and pulled over the Allegheny Mountains on rails to be set back into the Susquehanna River drainage on the eastern side (https://www.nps.gov/alpo/index.htm). Canal towpath remnants can be seen along the Roaring Run trail which begins in Apollo.

The service of the 11th Pennsylvania Reserves is wonderfully chronicled in Joseph Gibbs' book Three Years in the Bloody Eleventh and a monument honoring this regiment stands in the Wheat Field at Gettysburg (http://gettysburg.stonesentinels.com/union-monuments/pennsylvania/pennsylvania-infantry/11th-pennsylvania-reserves/).

Recent Improvements

This house remains remarkably true to the original vision and construction of S.M. Jackson. The wrap around porch and second floor extension over the rear porch were added by the General near the turn of the century. Architecturally, to the best of my knowledge, nothing further has been altered. Wiring was replaced by the third owners and I've replaced the tower roofing and porch roofs while retaining the original slate of the main roof.

I've also replaced the roof of the carriage house which sits atop a one car garage. That building was once a gift/furniture shop and later a rental unit. It consists of kitchen, bath and 3 other rooms. I have not used it for any purpose besides storage since purchasing the home in 2004.
