Built in 1898 by German immigrant Henry B. Ehrlich, this stunning Queen Anne Victorian is a George Franklin Barber design located in the heart of downtown Bainbridge. The original home on this lot tragically burned, but Ehrlich salvaged the front door, several interior doors, and multiple fireplace mantels to incorporate into the new build. With balloon frame construction, 6” thick walls and floors, heart pine flooring, and cypress siding, the craftsmanship is unmatched. This home was the first in Bainbridge to be wired for electricity and to receive telephone service. Its grand design features include a dramatic foyer flanked by formal parlors with restored metal ceilings and original pocket doors, and a half-round dining room with 7-foot-tall curved windows. Leaded and stained glass appear throughout, including in the third-floor walk-up attic. The kitchen features natural marble countertops, marrying historic charm with modern elegance. During the 1940s, the home served as a boarding house and was later divided into apartments. Over the years, careful restoration has brought the property back toward its original glory, preserving its architectural legacy. A new engineered slate roof was installed in 2020, and essential systems such as plumbing and electrical have been updated. The property also includes multiple outbuildings: a wired workshop with full bath (ideal for conversion), a second wired storage building, a barn with covered RV or boat storage, and a small greenhouse. A newer back deck leads to an above-ground pool, and the home sits on a spacious lot with an irrigation well. |
