Historical Overview

This home, situated on lot 433, can proudly trace its location to the establishment of the first township in the Northwest Territories in 1788, handpicked by George Washington and executed by the Ohio Land Company of Associates led by Rufus Putnam.
Mr. Perez Morten of Boston, the original owner of the lot, had made his purchase with Continental specie and silver. A shareholder in the Ohio Company, he never journeyed to Marietta to see his investment.
The property, still without edifice, then passed through several transactions; to Daniel Breck and several members of the Clark family (who built the home next door at 515 Fifth Street.

In 1868 Esther Clark and her sister Clarinda sold the house to Frederick E. Pearce of the Union Bank. Deed records show that Mr. Pearce would have had the original section of the house constructed in that year. His original deed was signed by Ohio Governor Rutherford B. Hayes, the future president of the United States.
The original house was a simple square, a Vernacular two story frame house with Colonial Revival elements. The 1902 Atlas reveals that an addition had been added to the rear of the house.
