About the Whitaker House and Mason

The Town of Mason Conservation Commission received this large center chimney colonial home through the estate of noted inventor/author Bronson Potter. Built by William Whitaker in 1802-03, this farmhouse is named for his son Herman as noted in the Mason History, but it is not on the Historic Register. The two wings were probably added later in the 19th century as the farm thrived and the family grew. The unfinished end of the south wing originally housed the family horses. Sited on nearly 6 acres, this homestead abuts 120 acres of town conservation land. The 18 room house has over 4,000 square feet of living area, with 5 fireplaces and enclosed sunporch overlooking pond. Numerous rooms have many possibilities, including home office with a separate entrance. Detached 3-car garage includes horse stall.

Mason, the boyhood home of Uncle Sam, is a rural town in southern New Hampshire’s Monadnock Region (1,307 population in 2005). Mason's forested hills have many trails enjoyed by horseback riders and hikers. The Whitaker house is located on a quiet country road in Mason’s Village Residential District, where zoning allows for certain home businesses. It is in commuting distance to Nashua, NH and 1 1/2 hours drive to Boston.
