	Athenaeum Rectory Athenaeum Rectory is all that remains of an extraordinary school for girls which flourished from 1852 to 1904. The Moorish Gothic architecture of the Rectory sets it apart from all other buildings in the area. Architect Adolpus Heiman designed the home for Samuel Polk Walker, nephew of President James K. Polk. In 1837 the house was completed and became the home of The Reverend Mr. Franklin Gillette Smith who came to the area to be president of another school the Columbia Female Institute. In 1851 Smith resigned from the Institute to found the Columbia Athenaeum School and the Smith family home continued to be in the Athenaeum Rectory.
