Holden-Jones House - 820 Ward Street
Hidden among the oak trees on Ward Street is the cottage style home of Thomas and Andrea Smith. This home was originally built by W. C. Rogers around 1904. He and two of his sons, established and operated the Rogers Dry Goods Company on Live Oak Street. In 1921, Earl C. Smith bought the home. Mr. Smith worked several years at the Allen's Drug Store until he established his own Smith Drug Company on Live Oak Street. He purchased Sanitarium Drug Store and opened a drug store in the then newly opened Hilton Hotel.
The Smith's had one daughter, Virginia Earle, who married Tom Holden. After Mr. Smith's death in 1932, his daughter and her husband received title to the house. Virginia Earle Holden lived in the house until 1998. In 2002, it was sold to Calvin and Janette Jones.
The 4 bedroom, 2 bath house has been completely restored, but everything left original. The front room contains a mirror from the original Sanitarium Drug Store when it was owned by Mr. Smith. There are several pieces of furniture from the original owners.
