Pinecrest - 1870 “Vermilion Estate” Italianate Victorian Estate/Farm
This entire estate was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It was designed by noted architect Charles A. Dunham of Dunham & Jordan who designed many Iowa courthouses. It was built for Civil War Captain William Vermilion, and described in the book “Love Amid The Turmoil” as his “dream house”.
This property includes 23 acres of prime Iowa pasture and timber with a 6 acre yard, 2 acre pond with 3 bridges and large pond gazebo. There is a large 1871 updated Iowa historic barn repainted and reroofed 2014, large two car garage/workshop, granary repainted 2014, bunkhouse, playhouse, garden gazebo, orchard, and large garden. Most authentic Victorian in the area.
The Victorian exterior decor features ornate dentils and brackets, tall arched and hooded windows, hipped multilevel roof with wide ornate eaves and “widows walk”, tall original doors, ornate porches and a large bay window. Plus updated efficient heat/central air and updated appliances and electrical. Updated recently inspected septic system, 6 color exterior paint, 300 foot entry driveway, good insulation, ornate 40 year Victorian roofing. Large recently redone Victorian-styled veranda in back.
Interior features include a quarter turn black walnut staircase in front entry, etched and stained glass, tall windows with cornices, ornate W.F. Norman “tin” ceilings throughout, paneled and pocket doors, 1870 parlor stove, original updated fireplace converted to gas, Bradbury & Bradbury Victorian wallpapers. Kitchen is updated Victorian décor with modern appliances. There are six bedrooms upstairs. There are two updated bathrooms. The downstairs rooms include a formal parlor and dining room, living or family room, office and game rooms and kitchen.
