The Minie Ball House
At night sitting in the porch swing with the only light from the stars, listening to the breeze ruffle leaves in the cottonwood trees and night breezes carry the perfume of honeysuckle, just then--, if you listen closely with your ears and your heart, you can hear the deep hum of the riverboats ploughing upstream over the levee at Friars Point, MS.Friars Point, a quaint and historic town, is the only town in Mississippi that the mighty Mississippi River did not "eat or leave" The Minie Ball House sits at the base of the Mississippi River levee, in the heart of cotton country in the Mississippi Delta. The house is now about 500 yards from the Mississippi River and was turned by an African American gentleman and a team of mules when the big levee was built to protect all of the Delta area from the ravages of the Mississippi River floods.
During the Civil War, the house was used as Union headquarters by General Napoleon Bonaparte Buford.
It was a major staging point for Union troops to be deployed during the War.
Located 13 miles from Home of the Blues, Clarksdale, MS Friars Point is home to blues artists, Sam Carr and Robert Nighthawk who played their blues on the bench in front of Hirsberg's Drug Store.
