Stone and Shaker Craftsmanship Plus Sustainability

Cross the stone bridge to this magnificent stone and timber house. The original home, built in the late 1890’s, has been extensively rebuilt and expanded with traditional Shaker craftsmanship. The attention to detail is evident throughout this unique home. This is the stone mason’s own home, featuring stone, marble and old-growth timber with 24 inch planks. The home has large gracious rooms on both floors, and a large stone basement.

This one of a kind colonial style stone home sits on 2 private acres, featuring a picturesque stream, and is enhanced by dry stone walls and perennial gardens. Lilacs and an apple tree grace the yard that is surrounded by firs, birches, maples and many other specimens. Every window has a view.

Beside the timeless appeal of timber and stone which only improve with age, this home was built by a craftsman and an environmentally conscious artisan and is the epitome of being “Green” - energy efficiency, sustainability with no chemically treated lumber. The living room fireplace is a Rumford design, an energy-efficient design by Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, a colleague of Ben Franklin. The centralized stone fireplace is a heat sink - 3 stories of stone, (basement, first, second floor) -which holds the heat in winter as well as the cool in summer.

Details also include:
--Raw materials – lumber cut, milled aged by the owner.
--Shaker details – peg rail, corner moldings, hand crafted pine kitchen cupboards
--Heated garage and workshop
--Walk-out basement with wine cellar
--Beautiful rural Rensselaer County
--Close to skiing and hiking and the beauty of the Berkshires

Each room has a Creda Radiant Storage Heater from Switzerland, offering energy efficient radiant heat. These units heat up over night and dissipate heat during the day. A panel in the basement allows for setting for off peak usage. There is a thermostat for each unit, as well. Finally, a wood stove using the renewal resource of wood also heats the stone of the home.
