Rowallan
On the National Register of Historic Places this classical revival estate was the winter residence for Alexander Lindsay. He started what became one of the largest department stores in the country. His daughter, an architect, designed the house which he named Rowallan after a castle in his native Scotland. John D. Rockefeller would often visit on Thursdays for tea to hear Mrs. Lindsay sing opera. Recent major upgrades and renovations have been made. In 1998 the entire house was lifted three feet, leveled, and then placed back on concrete pillars and steel beams. New plumbing, wiring, heating, and air conditioning were also installed. In 2009 renovations included new fixtures, air conditioners, quality appliances, built in Ipod, and many other changes. The 3rd floor was renovated which added 2700 square feet of bonus rooms and separate ½ bath. All renovations were done with the greatest of care and the finest of materials to maintain the historical nature of this home. Today the home features top of the line appliances including an Aga gas six burner stove with three ovens, oak and pine floors, security and sound system, 7 fireplaces, 8 a/c zones, 9’ ceilings, some very large rooms, granite counters, generator, brick drives and patios, pool, gazebo, separate 1000 sf garage & shops, and a multi-room separate cabana including game room, bar, and two separate bathrooms.Archived in April, 2013
