About Primrose Hill Plantation

WELCOME TO PRIMROSE HILL PLANTATION

This beautiful home has over 5000 sq.ft. of living space set on 5 acres of park-like grounds. There are 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms in the main house with 10 fireplaces. The first floor has 3 living areas. The original Men’s Parlor includes plantation shutters, crown molding, sitting area in turret and pocket doors connecting to the original Ladies Parlor which features crown molding, fireplace with working ventless gas insert and pine floors.

A formal Living Room with marble fireplace and ornate mirror, plantation shutters, crown molding and pegged chestnut floors leads to the formal Dining Room with restored antique chandelier, fireplace and built-in china closet. The Kitchen has new granite counters, backsplash, appliances, sink and faucet. Restored period light fixtures hang from an exposed beam ceiling and a brick fireplace and hearth supports a soapstone woodstove. The kitchen is bounded by a brick patio and gardens to the west and a tiled Sunroom on the east. This room makes a wonderful breakfast room with 8 windows and a door leading out to a shady area with apple tree and grape vines. A Pantry, large utility/laundry room and full bath round out the first floor.

A Foyer and staircase with a coffin niche leads to the second floor bedrooms. The large Master Bedroom Suite includes a fireplace, a sitting area in the turret, a dressing room with three closets and a fireplace and a master bath with dual sinks, tile floor, shower and fireplace. This floor also contains a full hall bath, two large bedrooms and a smaller back bedroom, which can double as an office and has a narrow staircase down to the kitchen. A walk-up attic is partially finished with lots of storage, and bright, new windows. This beautiful space can easily be converted into a recreation or bonus room, additional bedrooms or another master suite!! Use your imagination. The attached one bed, one bath, 612 sq.ft. apartment can be accessed through the middle bedroom and has a large bedroom, sunny living area and boasts gleaming original oak floors.

The apartment has a roomy eat-in kitchen with lots of cabinets and connects to a private balcony and entrance. Below the apartment is an attached 2 car garage. There is also a large detached garage housing a tractor mower that will convey. The park-like grounds offer a large grass lawn, governor's drive, mature landscaping, a fenced-in herb and vegetable garden, fruit trees and grapevines, and a wooded area. An antique log smokehouse, brick outhouse and newer smokehouse are also on the grounds.

Primrose Hill Plantation was built by Colonel James McDonald in 1827. Later in the 1800’s the home was expanded, remodeled and “Victorianized” including adding three turrets. In the 1950’s the two car garage and apartment was added. Designated a landmark by the Washington County History and Landmarks Foundation. Rural setting, yet only 18 minutes away from the Pittsburgh International Airport, 23 minutes away from Robinson Township with all the shopping, restaurants, malls, etc., and 30 minutes to downtown Pittsburgh. Near the intersection of two bike trails – the Montour Trail and the Panhandle Trail, the Fort Cherry Golf Course and local schools.
