During the renovation process the entire home was gutted. The following items were totally removed: dry-stack brick foundation, siding, windows, roofing material, doors, plaster/lathes, electrical (both wiring and fixtures), plumbing (there was very little, only a small toilet/sink under the stairway and a kitchen sink), two chimneys, first floor flooring and joists, and some room partitions.

The following items were original to the house. The first-floor open staircase, a colored-glass window in each of the two box-windows (living room and master bedroom). Much of the woodwork. While the second floor has been carpeted, it did retain the original wood-plank flooring. Two original doors (living room and dining room) with etched glass featuring the battleship U.S.S. Maine.

The following items were newly installed after the demolition. A full basement (walkout with garage) was added using insulating Styrofoam forms with poured cement. First floor joists with double subflooring as well as additional second floor joists, new interior wall framing where needed. Pella insulated double-hung windows with full screens. Insulated exterior doors. Vinyl siding with wind-wrap and gutters. New roof (fall of 2008; including sheeting, felt, architectural 30-year shingles, and vents). All wiring (including amp box and fixtures) and plumbing (including water heater, lines, and fixtures). Multi-stage high-energy efficient furnace and 14-seer central air (spring 2005; including dust filtration and humidification systems; all new ductwork), gas fireplace with blower. Rural water, septic tank. Drywall throughout. Custom cabinetry in oak and maple. Flooring in tile and carpet. ADT security system; phone/satellite/fiber optics connections. Kitchen appliances are built in (side by side refrigerator, wall oven, gas stovetop, microwave over stovetop with vent, dishwasher, garbage disposal; all with product manuals). Front open porch, rear deck, and side entry terrace with pergola.

The property also features the original barn (just big enough for a team of horses and a buggy) and a single car garage with cement floor. The portable steel buildings include a single garage with floor and two horse shelters.

The property is close to Interstate-35 and just outside of the county seat of Leon, Iowa. It is centrally located between the Kansas City and Des Moines International airports, and within 30 minutes of the Amtrak depot. Graceland University is just minutes away.

The county seat of Leon has all the amenities that you have come to expect in a residential community. It features a new Hospital, new large High school complex, elementary schools, 2 new banks, an original Carnegie foundation library, city park with municiple pool, movie theater, many other amenities.

While the property is a single family dwelling, it would be an excellent opportunity for use as a bed-and-breakfast and could be combined with the church for small intimate weddings and for the renewal of vows.
