Beginning as a meager three room, two level "farm cottage" in approximately 1664; this original section is believed to be one of the earliest homes within the township of Middletown.
Throughout the years this "cottage" was expanded upon to accomodate the growing needs of its owners. A Greek revival style main block with "Eyebrow" windows in the walk-up attic was added in approximately 1820. The home grew further around the 1860's and again in approximately 1875. A final 20th century creation expanded the home to its present footprint to include the oversized direct entry two car garage.
Keeping with the eclectic mix of styles of its evolution, this wonderful masterpiece of time has been meticulously restored by its current owners. There are exposed areas of the post and beam construction incorporated into the home with hand-hewn and pegged timbers evident in the attic and basement areas. Original and re-claimed wide planked pumpkin pine flooring is found throughout the home as well as much period detail, original moldings, original doors, built-ins and wavy glass windows. Some of the major improvements include the installation of architectural grade shingles and metal roofing, updated electric, upgraded plumbing and newer heating system.
The current flow of the main public level allows for a gracious entry room for greeting visitors, a spacious living room with fireplace and an informal dining room all with period detail. The custom kitchen, which has been recently completed, includes handcrafted cabinetry from Maine, Vermont soapstone counters, a breakfast island, a six burner stainless steel Viking commercial style range, Bosch dishwasher and Sub-Zero refrigerator with integrated front panels. The walk-in pantry, convenient for storage, houses the washer/dryer. The study and family room with built-ins, fireplace and half bath are found within the original reputed 1664 "Keeping Room" and kitchen area of the home.
The upper level contains the private quarters of this fine residence. A generous master bedroom suite with private bath and dressing/sitting room can be found at one end of the home. The original sleeping area of the believed 1664 "farm cottage" has been transformed into another bedroom suite with attached bath, allowing for private quarters for extended family and guests. Two additional bedrooms each sharing the general bath are also found on this level. From the hallway is the access stairs to the third level walk-up attic with three addition spaces, believed to have housed servants in earlier times. High ceilings and generous closet space, unusual for a home of this period, are found throughout the residence as well.
Placed well back from the road frontage, on approximately three quarters of an acre of land, this amazing example of historic quality, sits amongst professionally installed landscaping of lavish gardens and private patios.
