Near the Old Governor's Mansion

2-story historic wood and brick federal style home commands the southwest corner of liberty and greene streets – built in 1820 – the original owner being Dr. Charles Paine – it features a two story portico with four columns and a balcony above the entrance – there are four windows across the front porch which provide light for the rooms which flank the lovely entry hall – to the back of the house, there is another porch, this one described by Linley in Architecture of Middle Georgia as being pleasant with scroll saw work – it is an excellent vantage point for enjoying one’s surroundings and the most charming garden – the house has 4 bedrooms – one of which is presently used as an office – 3 baths, a living room or parlor, a dining room, a den, a kitchen and a separate laundry – the ceilings are, of course, the lovely tall ones – the floors are of wood which is now 190 years old – there are gorgeous mantles, wainscoting, and a graceful staircase – there are many large closets – the roof is new and the hvacs are three in number – the Paine-Jones house is attributed to John Marlor and described by many local residents as “the most beautifully appointed.”
