Description / Comments
The historic Burdick-Saunders House was built in 1887 by Phineas Burdick, a powerfulorator and noted Prohibitionist, and later owned by Earl P. Saunders, Secretary-
General of the Conference of the Seventh Day Baptist Church. It is located in the
Alfred Historic District, and is listed on the New York State and National Registers of
Historic Places.
The house is built in the Stick Style, which emphasizes “stickwork” or decorative halftimbering.
Elaborate porches, decorative siding textures and mouldings, steep slate
roofs with overhanging bracketed eaves, all typical of the style, characterize this
house. It is a celebration of wood-frame construction.
