c. 1915 Colonial

Yorktown Heights, New York 10598

Glorious Old Colonial on 3.9 Acres Across from an Apple Orchard!

Front View
Front View
Children (and adults!) love exploring this home with its long upstairs hall, two staircases, and downstairs circular traffic pattern. The wonderful layout of the house is especially appealing to the chief cook and laundress since they won’t feel isolated. The family room and laundry room are located directly off the kitchen.

The house faces south filling it with sunlight, and the two huge horse chestnut trees in front of the house provide protection from the hot summer sun. Its location is very convenient for those commuting to the south because of the easy southbound access; less than a mile to the Taconic State Parkway (TSP).

On an 1872 map of Yorktown, the property appears to belong to a family named Fowler. According to a neighbor, who is 90+ years old, this home, and much of the surrounding land, originally belonged to his family.

There are two stone pillars and a gate to a gravel drive on the west end of the property. There are ruins of a blacktopped tennis court in the east yard and barns, sheds, and a water tank in the back yard woods. Behind the house is an asparagus patch planted in the early 1980s and in the east yard a garden for vegetables. Sometime in the 1980s, the water system was converted from a well to town water.

Some of the first renovations and additions were done in the 1915-20 era. In 2001-02, the interior was repainted; the roof taken down to the studs and replaced; copper gutters added; the sun porch painted, the supports improved and a drop ceiling added; the sun porch re-roofed; chimney work done; and the siding and windows replaced. The only window that is not new is in the walkthrough space to the unheated storage area off the family room. Some exterior work was also done in 2002: the front yard was sodded and landscaped, and the two horse chestnuts trimmed to form a canopy.

Main Level Features

  • Large, front-to-back entrance hall accommodates the main staircase and separates the living room and dining room. There is a coat closet with storage space under the stairs. The front entrance door has 2 sidelights and a storm door and there is an additional door at the opposite end of the hall which exits to the back yard.

  • The 3-season sun porch has 300 panes of glass and 6 sets of French doors, 2 sets of French doors lead to the living room, and the other 4 sets have screens and access the outside. There is a wonderful floor-to-ceiling stone and brick fireplace. Note: the radiators are still in place but have been disconnected.

  • The living room extends from the front of the house to the back and features a brick fireplace with glass doors. There is ample room for lots of furniture and could easily accommodate a grand piano.

  • There is plenty of space in the formal dining room for a large table and chairs, plus an abundant amount of wall space for china cabinets and display cases.

  • The study has a door to a full bathroom. This room can easily accommodate a large desk and other office furniture or it could be used for an elderly guest.

  • Full bath with window has 2 doors, 1 to study and 1 to laundry room.

  • The large eat-in kitchen is perfectly set between the formal dining room and family room. There is direct access to a paneled laundry room which features a large, lighted walk-in pantry with shelves, and a door to full bathroom. Note: the walls behind the paneling are plaster, but were not in good condition.

  • The cozy family room with woodstove is located right next to the kitchen, so the cook is not isolated from the rest of the family while preparing meals. A small room (presently used as an office), as well as the accessory staircase and doors to the side porch and former lavatory pass-through, and basement are all located off the family room.

  • The former half bath/walk-through to the unheated storage area (cold storage) is currently used as a coat closet and for storage. The unheated storage area has an extra refrigerator.

  • The open side porch provides shelter, a great place to set packages or groceries during bad weather while unlocking and opening the door. There is also a door to the cold storage room.

Upper Level Features

  • Two staircases lead up to the second level -- one from the main entry hall and the other from the family room.

  • There are 19 closet spaces upstairs plus a seasonal storage room, which was originally the fourth full bathroom.

  • Four bedrooms -- each with 2 small shelved closets plus 1 or 2 regular closets -- are accessed from the main upstairs hallway.

  • 2 linen closets along the upstairs hall provide the opportunity to separate towels from bed linens.

  • Bedroom 1 - “The Green Room” has windows facing the east and south and gets great morning sun.

  • Bedroom 2 - “The Yellow Room” is presently used for storage, but would make a wonderful bedroom since it overlooks the backyard.

  • Bedroom 3 - “The Blue Room” is perfect for guests since is it directly across the hall from the full guest bathroom.

  • Bedroom 4 - “The Purple & White Room” is very sunny and has 2 small storage closets and 1 clothes closet.

  • Bedroom 5 - “The Master Bedroom” has direct access to the ceramic-tiled master bath and features 2 clothes closets and 2 small storage closets with shelves. The attic can be accessed from a closet in this room.

  • Bedroom 6 - “The Red & White Room” has 3 closets and plenty of wall space for furniture.

  • Bedroom 7 -“The Sewing/Guest Room”, which has a door out to the roof over the enclosed porch, has 3 closets and is brightened by the afternoon sun.

  • Ceramic-tiled guest bathroom.

  • Former full bathroom is now used as a storage room.

Basement Description

  • The full basement, with ample head room, provides storage for paint, extra furniture, etc., and stays warm in the winter due to the furnace and hot water heater.

  • The oil tank room has two 275-gallon oil storage tanks.

  • There is a walled-off section in rear of basement which was built as a bomb shelter, but works great for storage too!
