Cozy Cottage
The side hall plan Pendleton house is one of a small group of Federal period gambrel roofed houses still standing in New Bern. It appears to have been built during the period 1800 – 1815, either for Sylvester Pendleton, a sea captain who died by 1807, or his son, Simon. The lot upon which the house stands was purchased by Sylvester Pendleton from William Tisdale in 1788 and remained with Pendleton‘s heirs until 1846.Although the Pendleton house has been much altered and expanded, it retains the charm and character of its diminutive gambrel form. As constructed, the three bay house was one room deep, with the full width shed front porch typically found on gambrels in New Bern. Within, the house has little surviving early woodwork. The upper flight of the re-worked two run stairs retains sections of its simple rounded handrail, supported by plain square in section newels and pickets
