The Basselin House
High ceilings and original woodwork make this home just gorgeous. The gardens surounding the home is park like.The Basselin house, also called the Mansion,
was originally constructed in about 1859 as a residence of Theodore Basselin's father and mother.
Theodore Basselin came to Croghan from France with his parents in 1854. His father died eight years after the family settled in Croghan. Theodore was destined to make his fortune in the lumber business around 1877. He had his own sawmill and timberlands by 1887.
Standing in front of the house looking up at the roof, you will see two separate gables each spanning about half the widht of the house.
The original 1859 structure is under the gable on the left side. The remaining of the house was added by Theodore late in the 19th century to provide a more elaborate home for himself as his wealth increased.
Theodore married Florence Ager in 1903. They entertained and added a porte-cochere to the north side of the home, and an elaborate hand wrought iron fence, witch is still standing today.
The house today has 16 rooms and 4 baths and about 6,000 square feet of living space.
Theodore had no heirs, he left funds for the establishment of a parochial school, as a result, Crohan had the earliest four year Catholc high school in the Ogdensburg diocese. The building is now the American Maple Museum.
On the 1.6 acres stands also a 5 room house, once the bank of Croghan, would be great as a buisness, office or rental.
The Basselin house built in 1859 in the Greek Revival architectura style, was enhanced and enlarged during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The home has many classical design features that make it beautiful and special.
The classic front entry is surrounded by a narrow line of transom and sidelight windows and is incorporated into an elaborate door surround which includes pilasters that echo the columns of the porch.
The transom and sidelights themselves have grillwork typical of Greek Revival style.
The full width porch which wraps around one side provides several sitting areas.
Inside features the that reflect high style and tradition include elaborate cornices over the doors and windows, ornate capitla molding, the formal fireplace and wonderful ceiling decorations.
The home also includes beveled glass in doors, French doors on the front and the north side of the house, service stairs, butler's pantry, Ice box bay and a Porte-cochere.
The master bathrom feauters turn of the century clawfoot cast iron tub, clawfool bide, massive pedistal sink.
The basement is full size and includes a winecellar.
The kitchen is remodeled nicely, a lot of work have been done to preserv this beautiful home.
