1997 Renovation
The current owners have lived in the property since 1995. In 1997, extensive renovations of the home were undertaken. The stone was re-exposed on the section nearest to the road. This section of the home dates back to 1815-1825. The walls are 2 feet thick.

The other section of the home dates to circa 1910. The current owners built three addtions on this encompassing upstairs, downstairs and the basement area (except under the kitchen which has no basement).

The Property - The farm is the first preserved farm in Lancaster County (see plaque in attic) and benefits from its Act 319 (Clean and Green) status, allowing for a lower tax assessment which is currently $183,800. There are deed restrictions which include no hunting, logging or subdivision of the property. An additional residence is allowed.

The Lancaster Farmland Trust protects the 35.94 acres considered ¿farmland¿ which includes the approximately 25 acres of tilled land as well as the home and immediate grounds around it. The Lancaster Conservancy protects the 51.15 acres of "woodland" which slopes mainly down to Clark Run (a small creek) along the western boundary of the property. Clark Run empties into Tucquan Creek. The area around Tucquan Creek, Tucquan Glen, is part of the Pennsylvania Scenic River system.

The tilled land is comprised of three fields totaling approximately 25 acres. It has been farmed organically since 1996 by a neighboring farmer. These could be easily adapted as a wonderful location to keep horses.

The Lower Field - visible from the home. Deer are often spotted there at least part of the day. Currently approximately 30 turkeys inhabit this area. Connected to the backyard and lowest part of the lower field is a glen, a pleasant area with a huge tulip poplar tree. Close by is a one of two paw-paw patches. The second patch is downhill along Clark Run. Near this second paw-paw patch is a huge beech tree which was possibly alive before the discovery of America and now serves as a border marker for the property. Clark Run is shallow and has an un-maintained path along it.

The Main or Upper Field - located between Creamery Road and a power line that borders the West end of the property which runs down to Clark Run. There is a small triangular field south of the upper field which can be reached only by following the field at the southwest end near the power line.

Area Above the Driveway - contains a double fenced garden with butterfly bushes around its outside perimeter. The garden has 5 blueberry bushes, and 10 raised beds including 2 strawberry beds and an asparagus bed. Outside the garden is a huge oak tree in the woods near Creamery Road. There is also a burning bush, mimosa tree, two crabapple trees, two rows of larch or tamarack trees, a row of white pine trees, a cedar tree, and three holly trees in this area of the property.

The Bank Along the Driveway - is planted with heaths, heather, and Siberian cypress as groundcover as well as St. Johns Wort.

The Backyard - includes a birdfeeding area. Trees include chain, male pear, witch hazel, chestnut, apple, lilac, rose of Sharon, forsythia, dogwood, vibernum, crabapple, star magnolia and a combination wheeping/small cherry.

The Sideyard - next to the lower field has a pin oak and stone wall. Most of the wall is original to the property which was restored and the walk to the yard created. A large black walnut tree heads a row of eight black walnut trees in a row downhill. These were planted by the Pennsylvania Dutch when the land was originally settled and along with the wall marked the border between the farmhouse and farmland.

* Bank Barn - Built mostly of chestnut beams when no nails were used. In the past, the barn was used for both cattle and tobacco. A lean-to connected to one side of the barn. The lean-to was a tobacco "stripping room" and larger room under the barn was the "moist room" used in curing tobacco. Behind the barn is a stand of white pine probably planted in the 1930's as a conservation project.

Garage - a two-car tandem garage is located at the side of the barn near the home. There are several parking spaces at the end of the driveway near the garage and another at the top of the bank barn. At least two more car could be parked inside the top section of the bank barn.
