More Information

Bear Castle was built between 1725-32 on a 1000 acre original land grant from the King of England. On the Louisa County Historic Register, Bear Castle was prominently featured on "Road Trip to History." HGTV also filmed and featured Bear Castle on "If Walls Could Talk."

Originally 2 over 2 with additions. The English basement features three course American and English bond, pit sawn joists, 2 fireplaces, and dragon beams and brick configurations of the former three corner chimneys. Mortise and tenon, pegged pit sawn rafters and joists with roman numerals are evident in the attic. Walnut 8 & 4 panel doors with HL hinges, walnut and heart pine wainscoting, wide plank flooring on upper and lower levels. Large 10 bay farm equipment garage has 6 x 6 rough hewn beams suitable for construction for a caretakers home.

The Great Outdoors...

In spring, sit on the porch and admire the mature white Dogwood tree in the front lawn. Later pick fresh cherries from the small grove of cherry trees in the backyard. In fall, pick some Damson plums to make a smooth liqueur or jam. Enjoy the beautiful sunsets year round. Dig behind the old summer kitchen to find old pottery shards, hand blown glass and other artifacts. Resurrect the old ice house lined with fieldstone. Bear Castle remains one of Lake Anna's true treasures.
