The Samuel Hough House

The Samuel Hough House, c. 1819, is an exceptional example of the simple and elegant, well proportioned Federal style in impeccable condition with 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 4 working fireplaces, a modern kitchen, formal dining and living rooms, a finished basement, an alluring side porch and landscaped gardens overlooking protected views to the west. This historic property features superb hand carved woodwork, hard wood floors on 3 levels, air conditioning, high speed internet and satellite TV. Many original architectural features exist throughout this meticulously restored pre- and post-Civil War home.

Listed on the National Register with Historic Easements held by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the property is in the National Historic Landmark Waterford Historic District. It was first constructed in 1819 for a prosperous Quaker miller and his bride most probably by local master builder, Israel Griffith, who later bought and lived in the house himself.

In addition to the original six rooms in the front brick section, there is a Civil War addition housing the dining room and one of the upstairs bedrooms. This joined the old two story kitchen structure in which the modern kitchen replaces the warming room and the family room replaces the original main cooking room.

Enter the Samuel Hough House today and one immediately feels a connection to the past. Every room radiates character typical of the period’s Federal style: simple and elegant.
