PROPERTY HISTORY

This colonial farmhouse, NJ Historic Register #0220-34, is a handsome example of the Greek Revival architectural style, with a three-bay porch with Ionic fluted columns. The porch has been restored with mahogany flooring. The east wing also has a three-bay porch with columns, twin entrance and original shutters. The main house was built circa 1780, with additions in the early 1800's. According to the Register, this House and outbuildings are significant remnants of the farmsteads that once dotted the landscape prior to suburban building. Unusual features of the house are the steel doors and wine cellar, which was no doubt in some way related to the numerous cider presses in the vicinity. Hidden steps to the basement from the back door tend to substantiate that it was once used as a speakeasy.

The studio/office, with full walk-up attic, was formerly used as slave quarters. This property reportedly became a safe house pre-Civil War.
