More About This House
Formerly known as the Nadal House, this historic craftsman home was built in 1916. The prominent stone pillars, chimneys, and main fireplace are credited to renowned mason and artist Oliver Nestus Freeman whose work and life are honored in the city's Freeman Round Museum. The attention-grabbing beams and rafters, the overhanging eaves, the wide open veranda, and the chains linking the stone pillars make this house a classic quintessential Craftsman. In 2020 major improvements to the house were made while maintaining the integrity of its historic beauty and value. In fact, work was done with the advice of the N.C. Historic Preservation Office. The interior boasts a fabulous main fireplace in the beamed living room and two additional fireplaces; all three have been converted to natural gas. New plumbing, electric, and HVAC systems were installed. An additional full bathroom was added to the first floor, using the bathtub that was original to the house. All the original woodwork, windows, doors, and walls have been preserved and cared for. To help preserve the exterior and maintain moderate temperatures, gutters and storm windows were installed. Prior to the current owners, in 2018 the roof was re-shingled and the port cochere repaired.
This house of approximately 2400 square feet feels large. The first floor has 10' ceilings and tall 12-over-1 windows. There is tile in the laundry and bathrooms, and hardwood floors throughout the rest of the house. The solid wood doors--both exterior and interior--are original. There are two French-style interior doors stored in the attic. The kitchen and owner bath have been fully renovated and updated. The second floor's sloped ceilings give the two bedrooms and half-bath a cozy area for guests and children. Unusual for Wilson, there is a basement room, currently the owner's studio.
Outside in the rear is the restored garage with an attached patio and gazebo. A small back deck is an additional place to relax. Mature pecan trees, fig tree, oakleaf hydrangea, Eastern redbud, and azalea are some of nature's beauty on the .30 acre lot.
Wilson, NC is a vibrant small city full of life. The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park and Museum (and NC's annual Whirligig Festival) are destinations of their own. (The Park was featured in the April 2021 issue of Our State magazine.) Wilson Arts and the Edna Boykin Cultural Center are the hub for visual and performing arts in the community. The Foundation YMCA opened its new state of the art facilities in 2022. The J. Burt Gillette Athletic Complex features a soccer complex, baseball complex, all-children's playground, all-children's splash pad, Miracle League field, and the (new in December 2024) 26-court pickleball complex. Scheduled to open in 2026 is Wilson Stadium, home to the Wilson Warbirds, a single-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
You can walk from this beautiful home in the historic district to experience all that downtown Wilson has to offer. Restaurants, churches, the public library, grocery stores, shopping centers, and the Amtrak station all contribute to the thriving city of Wilson. North Carolina's state capital, Raleigh, is less than 50 miles away.
