More About This House
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to own a piece of American history. Constructed 1859. The Walter Place is one of the last grand mansions completed before the American Civil War. You can purchase this 11.4 acre estate in its entirety, or split the estate to singularly purchase the Walter Place Mansion and park, Polk Place or Featherston Place. The Walter Place is located at 300 West Chulahoma Ave, Holly Springs, MS. 38635, on a 5 acre lot. Designed by master architect Spires Boling, this 6 bedroom, 6 bathroom mansion boasts a combination of architectural styles. The Classic Greek Revival portico is framed by Gothic octagonal towers. In 1903, the home was remodeled by Theodore C. Link, mastermind behind Mississippi Capital Building. The estate was refurbished in 2019-20, including the beautiful Gunite pool, water features and reflection pond. Specific antique furniture to be included in the purchase price. The home has zone heating/cooling with 4 hvac units. The kitchen is modern with a Viking range, built in refrigerator, ice machine and freezer.
Colonel Harvey Washington Walter, the first President of the Mississippi Central Railroad, was the original owner of the property. An American lawyer who came to Holly Springs in 1838, worked alongside Spires Boling to weave a distinct blend of Greek Revival and Gothic Revival architectural flares within the mansion.
Included in the estate are two historic sister homes, Polk Place and Featherston Place, each sitting on 0.5 acres. Constructed in 1849 by General Thomas G. Polk, Polk Place is a one and a half story Greek Revival house with a single bay entrance portico, framed by beautiful Tuscan columns. On the east side is a gorgeous gable front porch with a Palladian arch opening-an addition from architect Theodore Link in the early 1900s. On the property is a carriage that has the potential for an efficiency apartment.
Positioned directly across from Polk Place is Featherston Place. Built in 1837 by Alexander C. McEwen, it is a one and a half story Greek Revival house with Tuscan columns framing the porticos. These were added by Theodore Link. The home boasts upper and lower sunrooms with a detached carport. On the property is the original three room structure that is the site of an antebellum kitchen and servants quarters.
Century old private gardens with a large pavilion with natural water features sit at the heart of the of the property, between the three homes. Japanese style stonework and bridges has been restored as a unique feature of this gem in Holly Springs.
