More About This House

The home is 6,756 square feet on three levels, excluding the large daylight basement. Everything was built to the high standards of the era. The foundation is stone, up to 1.5 feet thick and the walls, including most interior walls, are solid brick and generally about a foot thick.

The home was a custom collaboration between a well known architect and a client who was a prominent furniture designer. The original, substantial woodwork and doors with Eastlake style hardware remain throughout and quite a few remain in natural finish. Lighting fixtures in some of the main rooms are substantial antiques.

The first floor opens to the foyer into a 12 foot wide central hall with a massive, ornate main staircase from the first floor to the top of the house in a unique Eastlake design and matching wainscot, all of maple. The hall is 40 feet high from the main level to the ceiling on the third floor where there is a door to the attic and a stairwell to the Widow's Walk just below the tower.

To the left of the foyer is the library (14' X 18 ') which has original built in bookcases, an ornate wooden ceiling in the original finish, and a gas fireplace.

Directly across the foyer is the large formal parlor (14' X 23') with a bay window and two arched walk passageways (powder room is under the left arch) to the music room (14'3" X 19'4") with a gas fireplace and access to the side patio.

The formal dining room (15'6" X 22') at the end of the foyer has 10 original stained glass windows, 6 of which are at the top of the large bay and a gas fireplace.

There are 9 pocket doors on the first level. The set at the foyer and the set at the dining room have etched glass. There is a pair at the library and the pair at the parlor have burled walnut insets. There is a pocket door at the kitchen and another leading to the servant's staircase and the butler's pantry.

Off the dining room is the kitchen's dining area (13'9" X 16'8") with a door leading to the deck and the backyard and the working area (6' X 16'8") with cabinets, dishwasher, and refrigerator topped by 3 stained glass panes set into the ceiling matching those in the dining room as well as the ones above the kitchen sink and above the deck door leading to the garden.

The completely fenced garden, as well as the front and side of the house have mature shrubs, perennials and roses along the original iron fence on the Western Avenue side of the house.

The second level has four large principle bedrooms: Master bedroom (14' X 20'), Mbath (10'6" X 11'8"), 2 used as studies (11'9" X 16'8") and (15'5" X 16'9"), 2 good sized servant's rooms, one with a walk-in shower, both currently used as dressing rooms (9' X 13') & (10'5" X 12'3"), and a Den (13'5" X 15'4"). The second floor has a 3rd complete bathroom with clawfoot tub and a pocket door.

The third floor has three bedrooms: (12' X 21'3"), (14' X 14'), (14'7" X 19'3"), living/dining rm (15'4" X 16'6"), a kitchen (9' X 13'6") with pantry, and a full bath/walk-in shower. The third floor is a rentable unit with its own staircase.

The basement has several large rooms which are used for garden supplies, storage, and workshop space. The cellar has a Bilco exit door to the back yard, as well as the new gas furnace, the 50 gallon gas water heater, the washer and dryer, a toilet and an antique slop sink.

The house has unique and antique steam radiators all of which are not only beautiful but work well. Five round radiators with marble tops and 4 rectangular shaped radiators are stamped AA Griffing Iron Co. NY, pat'd Sept 22, 1874.

1 Englewood Place is not only solid and has great architectural integrity but is within walking distance to neighborhood restaurants: Roseanna's and Dove and Deer, among several; Numerous attractions include the Albany Insitute of History and Art, the New York State Museum, the Empire State Plaza, and the Schuyler Mansion.

Located across the street on Western Avenue is SUNY Albany Downtown Campus which offers a number of academic programs and also sponsors cultural events open to the public.

New York City and other destinations are accessible by Amtrak's Albany Rensselaer station. Adirondack Trailways and Greyhound stations are located in downtown Albany. There is also an extensive highway system if car travel is preferable.

History

1 Englewood Place, a free standing brick mansion with a corner tower, is the sole remaining Villa of three designed by the architect, William M. Woollett, who designed a number of houses in the Washington Park area. Woollett was born in Albany, attended M.I.T., and upon his father's death, assumed the architectural practice. William Woollett published two books: "Villas and Cottages or Homes for All" (1876). This publication included plans, elevations and views of twelve villas and ten cottages. The second publication was "Old Homes Made New" (1878), which illustrated the modernization of older houses to 1870s styles.

The first owner of 1 Englewood Place was Benjamin W. Wooster, a furniture and cabinet maker by trade. Wooster began an apprenticeship at the age of 19 and in 1843, at the age of 23, opened his own shop on South Pearl Street in Albany. He became a highly successful furniture and cabinet maker. In 1878, Mr. Wooster became president of the Albany County Bank. And also in 1878, with the architect William M. Woollett, he built 1 Englewood Place, an impressive private residence on the corner of State Street and Western Avenue on Washington Park.
