More About This House
The Murray House is a Registered Landmark in The City of Galveston. Its value to the history of the City of Galveston comes with its association with George Murray who constructed the house in 1907.Mr. Murray was a conductor with the Galveston, Houston, and Henderson Railroad. The Galveston, Houston, and Henderson Railroad was the first railroad to establish a connection between Galveston and Houston with the construction of the first railroad bridge in 1860. When it merged with the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad Company to form the Missouri Pacific in 1989, the railroad was the oldest operating railroad in the state at over 136 years.
The Murray House possesses distinctive characteristics of the Colonial Revival architectural style. The Murray House is an example of a house constructed in a transitional period where the popular Queen Anne style was replaced with the more subdued Colonial revival style.
The Murray House retains the asymmetrical form of the Queen Anne style, but replaces the exuberant details associated with Queen Anne, with the more refined details of Colonial Revival. The decorative details have been all but eliminated with the exception of the Doric columns on the porches.
According to the Field Guide to American Houses, asymmetrical Colonial Revival houses account for just 10% of the total number of the style.
