c. 1785 Georgian Colonial
Kilmarnock, Virginia 22482
Historic Clifton
Clifton was originally part of the vast Virginia holdings of Robert "King" Carter (ca. 1664-1732), the richest and most powerful Virginian of his day. At the time of his death, Carter held at least 295,000 acres of land, most of it part of the Northern Neck Proprietary, for which he served as Virginia agent from 1702 until 1711 and from 1722 until 1732.
Robert "King" Carter's son, Landon Carter (ca. 1710-1778), farmed the land he referred to as "Bloughpoint," now Clifton, during the mid-eighteenth century. His son, Landon Carter II, built the Georgian-style, two-story weatherboarded residence completed in 1785.
The four-square 3,344+/- SF home offers a unique symmetrical floorplan with a sidelong entry hall and paired stairs at each end of the hall. The central chimney serves fireplaces in two rooms on the first floor and four bedroom chambers on the second floor. According to Clifton’s current owner, the stairs served to separate access to sleeping quarters for men and women.
The spacious living and dining rooms with two fireplaces, large windows, and abundant natural light invite gatherings and celebrations. The primary bedroom with a bath is located on the main level for easy access. Four additional bedrooms with fireplaces are on the second level with a shared bath.
There are three dependencies: a one-room cabin, a workshop, and a garden shed. A pole barn was erected in 2009.
Clifton is under a deed of easement. Owners may add an additional 3,000 SF home.
