Gravelly Hill - A Brief History
Gravelly Hill was believed to have been built by Captain Samuel Gover, who fought in the War of 1812. Although it is a house typical of the early 18th century, it is thought to have been built much later in 1850. There is some evidence that the house was built by a shipbuilder. Of tidewater colonial style, it was owned by the Prout family of Southern Anne Arundel County for about a century. In the early 1900s it was purchased by the Blake family, who meticulously restored the house using hand hewn beams and colonial construction methods. The current owners purchased the property in 1999. The house, which was originally part of a 4,000 acre property, is now located on 5.63 acres and has a view from the kitchen and dining room of the newly established boxwood gardens. The house features seven working fireplaces and the floors and woodwork are original. There is a mural of the Piscataway Indians of southern Maryland building a canoe. The subject of the mural was chosen to honor those boat builders that existed in the country prior to British settlement.
