Cyrus Butler
A native to Northhampton, Mass., Cyrus Butler arrived in the Firelands in 1823 and purchased 160 acres from Perez Starr, one of the original Firelands grant holders. Butler then started up a factory manufacturing bar iron with the ore obtained in nearby Vermilion, and later became the community's first postmaster.He built his house in keeping with his position as the town's most affluent resident. Unfortunatly he lived only long enough to enjoy the home for a few years. The house was built in 1830 and Cyrus Butler was laid to rest in the local cemetery in 1844.

This historical home of Federal architectural style has an exterior of red brick laid up in Flemish bond on the front wall and in common bond on the other three sides.These exterior walls are 16" thick with six inch airspace. with 3-5 bedrooms, formal living, and dining room, library, kitchen with built-ins, a large, inviting keeping room, with hardwood floors throughout, and of course seven fireplaces.The house is built of red brick kilned in
Wellington, native sandstone, hand-hewn beams of oak, floors of black walnut and tulip wood, all cut from the acreage on which it stands.
When the fireplace of the original kitchen was unsealed , the original iron swinging crane and pot were still intact,as well as the old baking oven and Bible cupboard.

Throughout the home one finds an endless succession of priceless, fascinating items of interest: the lock on the front door imported from England with its seven inch key, the twelve pane windows with their original "bubble" glass, original indoor slanted shutters, the different detail in each of the seven mantels, and the stairway, with its ballusters and handrail of richly polished cherry -- all of which are classic in their simplicity.
