The Former 'Free School House'

This magnificent two-parcel, 53-acre waterfront property is known as “Free School House” Originally built around 1650, it was exceptional in its simplicity, constructed of brick that is 4 courses thick. These time-wizened brick walls are the living and dining room walls in the main home today.

The property consists of two parcels; one includes the main home and pier on 50.59 acres, primarily idyllic farmland fringed with 1884’ of water frontage along Free School Creek. The second parcel; 2.62 acres and 1197’ of water frontage, has a 1934 cottage on a peninsula with long views into the Severn River. The cottage has a screened porch, pier and boathouse and riprapped shoreline.

History

In his will of 1675, Henry Peasley gave 600 acres on the creek where he lived, today known as Free School Creek, for the “maintenance of a free school...”. It was the ancestor of today’s public schools. It included a home.
The brick portion of the home was the original schoolhouse. with later additions of sleeping quarters upstairs, still later additions of a kitchen, two additional bedrooms and in the 1960s, a garage.
