The Wright Home

Property features 22 acres, half-cleared and half wooded, extending to the top of the mountain that cradles the home providing privacy and seclusion. The backyard setting is the perfect sanctuary for wildlife, pets & children to safely roam and wander! The property also has a pond nestled in the wooded area, hiking paths, 90’ long barn, a 2-story building located to the side of the house with a workshop on the lower level and possible apartment upstairs, several outbuildings, an early log smoke house, and brick patio with a pergola perfect for entertaining.
First addition to the original log home was a 2 over 2 in 1939, a 1 over 1 addition in 1945, other additions in 1989, 1995 & 2004 includes new plumbing and electric and a custom kitchen with cherrywood cabinets and granite countertops.
House History:
Extensive research efforts were made to validate the history of this property by the owner along with founders of the nearby Crab Orchard Museum. Research began when a log of the original dwelling was exposed during remodeling. The log shows a building date of 1761 along with Scottish rite masonry symbols. Additional research shows that the home was built by James Hankins after King George III of England granted land in what is now Baptist Valley, Virginia as payment to soldiers who fought in the French and Indian War. The King later ordered landowners to leave by “the edict of 1763,” but some landowners disobeyed the King and stayed.
The owner provides documentation of this including the original parchment survey deed that has a hand-drawn sketch on the back showing the home with smoke coming out of the chimney, signifying these landowners had remained in 1763. Other documentation is a deed recorded in 1783 and another deed signed into law in 1794 by then Virginia Governor, Henry Lee (Lighthorse Harry) shown in the picture slideshow.
This property has great historical relevance to the founding of this nation! A history buff’s dream!
