History

The home and the Presbyterian Church beside it were both built in 1890. It was initially known as the Allen house and originally deeded in Marion County, as the current Dillon County was not created until 1910.

In the 1950s it was owned by two sisters. It may have been the surviving wife of the original builders as well as her sister. They were known for serving fantastic Sunday lunches is on the porch and in the sunroom area. Several current residents recall there as children. In the early 50s it was acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Coward. He operated a local full service station and she maintained a bed-and-breakfast for travelers.

Being an approximate midway point between Miami and New York, Latta developed a reputation and a bit of an industry as a travel stop. This was operated until the early 70s when the completion of interstate I-95 redirected traffic. An original postcard showing the front of the home will be forwarded to the new owner.

The home was then sold temporally to a local Latta area resident and attorney, Lafon Legette. He sold it to Dr. Granville Vance in 1999 as a restoration opportunity. Interior designer Kimberly Hayes then oversaw all aspects of the two year renovation.
