More About This House
Not many houses in the South, much less in Baxley, speak Southern charm the way the C.W.Deen House does. It sits in all its glory right down from Baxley’s primary red light on Main Street. Designed by Joseph J. Johnson, who also designed the county courthouse, the house’s actual construction started in 1894 and was completed in 1897. C.W. Deen had it built. As one of the leading businessmen and landowners of the early 1900s, he operated a timber and naval store, as well as a grist mill and store in Baxley.Deen and some other investors led a venture to bring a sugar refinery to Appling County, but to no avail. He moved his family to Florida but stayed active in the business of Appling County. In 1909, he sold the house to W. Hughes & Carrie Rogers. Mrs. Rogers co-founded the Baxley Women’s Club. Some decades later, Dr. Edmund Virusky purchased it, moved his family in, and set up shop in one of the downstairs rooms.
This Victorian house has stained glass windows, wrap-around porches, and a place of honor on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been amazingly well maintained also and is zoned commercial or residential. This showplace is now on the market and looking for a new owner.
