History

In 1883 when Ransom F Odion began work on his second Romeo home located in the "new" northern end of the village, he was already a well-known builder/architect, he was already a well-known builder/architect. Responsible for the first Congregational Church of Romeo and many of the most prominent homes built in the Romeo and surrounding communities during the 1870's and 80's. Mr. Odion chose to create a modified Italianate with rich exterior ornamentation and beautiful interior woodwork for his new residence. The carriage barn is original and on a humid day, it is all too apparent that houses did really live in it! the beautiful stand of trees on the north are the lasting legacy of this era.

Nothing is known of the gardens until the beginning of the 20th Century. The Odion home passed to Mr. and Mrs. M J Crissman, its third owner. Mr. Crissman was a banker by profession, but gardening was a passion for both of the Crissman. They converted the entire backyard into a garden (the original lot included the property beyond the fence, forming a large L-shaped lot). Surviving pictures of this era show a series of raised beds and gravel paths with a central birdbath feature. Outlines of this complex layout can still be discerned in the contours of the yard, but the only remnants of the Crissman garden are the two stonewalled beds on the south.

Today the house on Main Street is owned by Lowell and Peggy Hamilton. they have lovingly restored both the interior and exterior, returning this beautiful home to is past glory! The garden design is meant to evoke the late Victorian era but with far fewer maintenance requirements. The Hamilton's have added the front iron fence and boxwood hedging to define the space and an old-fashioned woven wire fence in the backyard for their very active pets. The front walk was changed to accommodate a center gate with walks leading to both front porches. Featured in the center is a heart-shaped "knot garden" of boxwoods and barberry with an historic cast-iron urn. Patio's have been added to increase the outdoor living area ad a salvaged outhouse now sits on the exact spot where its predecessor was located and acts as a quaint garden shed.

With LOVING care and great appreciation for its 138 -year history, the Odion home and gardens again sparkle like a jewel on Main Street.
