Glorious Dunham Massie Farm, c. 1845, Serene and Peaceful Waterfront on 51+/- Acres

Glorious Dunham Massie Farm, c.1845 with later additions is an exceptional waterfront estate of 51+ acres in Gloucester, VA. Privately situated on an amazing peninsula with 1,627 ft.+/-, the estate fronts Back Creek and the pristine North River.

A warm and welcoming presence beckons adventure from the moment you approach the entrance. A wide avenue of towering willow oaks, graced with wildflower meadows and pond, leads to the discreetly sited 1.5 story clapboard residence of 6,100 sq. ft. with bold brick chimneys,10 fireplaces and slate gable roof.

Featured on historic Virginia Garden Week Tours in 1998, 2010 and 2018, the home with lovely gardens, intriguing birdhouses and wildlife habitats, takes its origin from the historic home of the same name in Cheshire, England.

Immensely joyful and filled with light, the original two-over-two farmhouse, built for a member of the Taliaferro family of Ware Neck, is centered by two spacious wings affectionately appointed by the most recent owners. Architecturally designed additions embrace the beauty and serenity of the home.

Features include heart pine floors, eight-over-eight windows with water views from nearly every room, first floor Master en-suite, huge walk-in attics, spacious kitchen, dining and family room wing, and delightful screened porch with brick terrace for entertaining.

Dependencies include old paymaster station/two-story cottage/no plumbing, old caretaker house turned office, barn/storage/porch building, garden shed, smoke house converted to luxury dog bath, gazebo, corncrib, combined garage, storage, maintenance area for grounds and 2 waterfront lots.

Enhanced shoreline with rip-rap and jetties define the property. Dock, with 2 boat slips and decking, is located on Back Creek (6'MLW). Enjoy excellent fishing, crabbing and boating on North River, off the Mobjack Bay, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay.

Location is convenient to Williamsburg, Richmond, Charlottesville and Northern Virginia.

Dunham Massie Notes of Interest

1. Dunham Massie was built in 1845 for a member of the Taliaferro famly, whose ancestors owned land in the area known as Ditchley on Ware Neck in Gloucester, VA.

2. Dunham Massie takes its name from the historic home Dunham Massey in Cheshire, England.

3. From 1889 through the 1930s, Old Dominion Steamship Company Shipping Line of New York brought goods to Hockley Wharf on the Ware River. Horse drawn wagons delivered the goods to nearby Ware Neck Store.
