Dunham Massie Notes of Interest
1. Dunham Massie was built in 1845 for a member of the Taliaferro famly, whose ancestors owned land in the area known as Ditchley on Ware Neck in Gloucester, VA.2. Dunham Massie takes its name from the historic home Dunham Massey in Cheshire, England.
3. From 1889 through the 1930s, Old Dominion Steamship Company Shipping Line of New York brought goods to Hockley Wharf on the Ware River. Horse drawn wagons delivered the goods to nearby Ware Neck Store. Members of the Taliaferro family, through the purchase of the wharf and the store from Tazewell Thompson, were involved with this mercantile enterprise, including the receipt of payments at Dunham Massie's old paystation (now cottage) for the transport of goods.
