Historic Elizabeth Neighborhood

Elizabeth Community Association

The Elizabeth neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina is the city’s second oldest streetcar suburb. Founded in 1891 along what is now Elizabeth Avenue and boasting Elizabeth College and its own streetcar spur, Elizabeth has always been one of the city’s major business and residential areas. The present day neighborhood includes five separate early subdivisions developed along the Elizabeth Avenue-Hawthorne Lane-Seventh Street trolley line and the Central Avenue trolley line by the 1920s.

Two Blocks from Charlotte's Longest Greenway

Little Sugar Creek Greenway

When complete, the greenway will feature over 19 miles of trails and land connectors, from Toby Creek Greenway on North Tryon Street to Cordelia Park just north of uptown. The greenway will continue through the urban section and on to the South Carolina state line, conveniently linking Central Piedmont Community College, Carolina Healthcare System and the Park Road and Carolina Place shopping areas among many other destinations.

Surrounding Area

Originally developed as a streetcar suburb in the early 1900's, Elizabeth is one of Charlotte's oldest and most desirable neighborhoods. It is known for tree-lined streets and graceful historic homes. A new streetcar line will soon open, connecting the neighborhood to the center of Uptown Charlotte, one mile away. Elizabeth is home to two the city's three major hospitals, as well as Memorial Stadium, Independence Park, and a number of restaurants and stores all within easy walking distance.
