History
Julius C and Robert Miller were heads of the leading firm in their line of business in this section of Missouri in their time. Jules was a large property holder and wealthy, influential citizen of Moberly, Missouri. He was a German native born in Friderichsbrunen, Germany on March 29, 1843. He came from a highly esteemed family and is grandson of Frederick Miller, an officer in the army of Napoleon. Julius joined the Union forces from Saline County in 1862 shortly after winning rank as lieutenant. In 1872, he came to Moberly and engaged in the beer and ice business and opened "The City Saloon" shortly after joining his brother Robert Miller in 1874. It burned down and Julius and his brother lost everything due to lack of insurance.A few years later, he and his brother opened "Julius Miller & Bro Wholesale Beer and Ice Dealers." In the 1880s, Julius and Robert built this house that was said to be patterned from a castle that was on the Rhine River, a landmark they recalled from their boyhood days in Germany. The Millers did not employ a professional architect but rather they designed the house themselves perhaps with the aid of the carpenters and masons who did the work. The house was said to have been the first one in the area with electric lights and indoor plumbing. Julius lived in the house for the next few years.
Julius Miller was instrumental in securing such institutions as the Merchants Hotel and the Miller Fair Ground Park.
In 1906 Julius Miller was the president of the Moberly Trust Company that opened in 1906 with the first deposits showing $106,344 and a statement made at the close of business at July 16, 1908 showed deposits of $270,267, an increase of over $163,923 within three years of business. In the same year of 1906, Julius was elected Randolph County Judge.
