More About This House
Main House-The main house (main picture) has 3 BR, 1.5 baths and approx. 2300 SF. It has central AC, gas FHA heat, and five fireplaces (install chimney liners in both chimneys hosting the home’s five fireplaces before use!) There is a a cobblestone driveway with room to park two cars. The flooring is pine throughout (one bedroom is carpet, and both baths are vinyl.)
As you walk into the front door, you face the home's staircase to the second floor, but not before entering a 20' x 40' room open to the kitchen, living room, and southern exposure. The room has two of the home’s five fireplaces.
There are three bedrooms and a full bathroom on the second floor with a fireplace in two of the bedrooms. There is also walk-up access to the attic. As you enter the attic, you will see the signature and date of one of the home’s builders.
The dining room is next to the kitchen on the first floor. It also has a fireplace that was used for heating and cooking in the 1800s, with several compartments that were used to bake and warm food.
There is access to the basement and to the carriage house from the dining room (excellent for in-law situation.) A half bath with exposed brick to the fireplace is also located off the dining room.
Carriage House-
The carriage house (pic with arches on the street) has 2 BR, 2.5 baths, and bonus room (den, dining, or bedroom) with original pine flooring, half bath and closet. The unit is approx.1400 SF with FHW gas heat. The furnace will function without electricity, so it has been a blessing in many snow and ice storms when the town loses power. The unit is primarily carpet (except kitchen and baths.) There are two bedrooms and two full baths on the second floor. One of the bathrooms is a master bath, the other functions as the main bath for the unit. There are two staircases (no carpet); one off the living room and the other off the kitchen. The washer/dryer hookups for the unit are located in the basement, which is accessible from the kitchen. Access to the Main unit is also accessible through the kitchen. The unit has a paved driveway and will park about four or five cars.
The water heaters are on separate billing as is the electric (except the basement and one carriage house bedroom. They are on the Main house circuits.) Both units have two floors. All electrical has been updated. All windows are vinyl replacement. There are two driveways, one for each unit. Each unit has ample closets.
History
Some History-The property was owned by William Henderson before the town was incorporated in 1764. At the time the town was incorporated, there were no more than 250 town residents. (http://history.rays-place.com/ma/worcester/fitch.htm) The house is located at the top of Blossom Street (where the street levels off.) Folklore suggests the location at the top of the hill was selected because it was easier to detect Indians approaching.
The property was transferred in the early 1800s to an award-winning farmer named Able F. Adams (sometime before 1836). His farm was featured in the New England Farmer and Horticultural Register, 1842. (Vol. 20 p. 258) In the publication, he discusses his methods for growing various crops on his sixty-acre farm. Mr. Adams (1807-1869) was also a town selectman.
Sometime after Mr. Adam's wife passed in 1891, (Harriet O. Putnam Adams), the property surrounding the house was parceled and sold. At this time, the city had entered the Victorian era. Most of the old houses in the town were built during this period. Their styles reflect the architecture of the time. (See yellow Victorian-style house next door in one of the pictures. I enjoyed viewing it every morning when I walked out the front door.)
You'll notice that the house abuts the street. This is because the street originally ended at the house. However, sometime in the late 1800s, the Adams permitted the street to continue beyond the structure through their property.
