History - The Cook Home

This stately residence has been family owned since it was built by Fred H. Cook in 1909. Mr. Cook was founder and co-owner of Cook-Anderson Company founded in 1896. At one time, the company was the largest employer in Beaver.

Cook-Anderson began in home construction but quickly grew to include a large lumber and building supply company as well as having coal, sand and gravel facilities and a rail company. The company was involved in the building and construction of many prominent homes and institutions throughout the region including buildings at Geneva and Grove City Colleges and homes in Beaver and Sewickley Heights. Because of their reputation for fine and detailed wood working, the company was also involved in restoration work at Colonial Williamsburg. To this day, the fine attention to detail and craftsmanship is evident in the handsome mill work in the Cook home.

In addition to being a prominent businessman, Mr. Cook had a passion for farming and raising animals. He was owner of Hillmede Farm & Dairy in Brighton Township located at the present site of the Medical Center of Beaver County. There he had the dairy business and was a breeder of award winning S.C. Brown Leghorn chickens that he exhibited along the east cost and was the recipient of many awards for his show birds. He also imported and then bred Belgian draft horses. These horses would become synonymous with the lumber company as a beautiful matched team of his Belgians would pull the Cook-Anderson wagon as they delivered lumber throughout the county.
