History

One of Wayland’s Most Historic Homes Restored to Modern Day Luxury
The John Parmenter Sr. farmhouse at 1 Bow Road was built in 1775, and passed down in
ownership through 9 generations of Parmenter family descendants. It is one of Wayland’s most
historically significant homes. On Wayland’s town website, in the A-Z of “who’s who” for famous Wayland families, the letter “P” is reserved for Parmenter.
A Brief History of the Parmenter Family in Wayland:
John Parmenter Sr. was born in 1588 in England, and arrived in New England in 1638. Anoriginal proprietor of Sudbury Plantation, he helped plan the town’s allotments of land to its
settling families. His house at 1 Bow Road stands in the heart of the first settlement of Sudbury Plantation, Wayland, which was incorporated in 1639. Over the years, John Parmenter Sr. held positions of Deacon, Selectman, and Commissioner, for the town’s political leadership. John Parmenter Sr. was also granted the first license for Sudbury Plantation’s first “house of common entertainment,” and in 1654 opened the first local pub a short distance down the road from his home, calling it Parmenter’s Tavern. The tavern would serve as the site of debate by residents to formally separate the Eastern and Western territories of Sudbury Plantation, among other political and economic meetings of the era. Parmenter’s Tavern stood on land which was owned by his son, John Parmenter Jr.

Over 242 years and 9 generations of Parmenters, the family continued ownership of the houseat 1 Bow Road. They mostly earned their living as farmers, and the family only became trulywealthy in the late 1800’s during its last generation under the home’s final resident, Jonathan M.Parmenter.Jonathan M. Parmenter quietly amassed one of the
largest fortunes of all Wayland residents of
his time, despite his appearance as a simple cattle farmer. He was often seen driving his horse drawn buggy at the head of a large heard of his cattle, covered in mud soaked clothing. While he never publicly flaunted his wealth, when he passed away in 1880, his estate went to probate and was publicly disclosed as valued at a net worth of $1.5 million. (With inflation, this would have been upwards of $30-$40 million today).
Jonathan M. Parmenter earned his wealth from being one of the first investors to provide seed money for the burgeoning local mill industry, and numerous other investments in real estate. Now, in 2019, the John Parmenter Sr. farmhouse begins the newest chapter in its rich history, with a beautiful restoration that maintains full historical character, while affording its next owner the essential modern luxury living amenities of today.
Located at 1 Bow Road, the first house in the Bow Road Historic District in Wayland.
Welcome home!
