History

Quantico is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Wicomico County, Maryland, United States, along the former stage route from Vienna to the port of Whitehaven on the Wicomico River. It consists of approximately 35 homes on the Quantico Creek.

The Crawford-Jones house is a late nineteenth century tee-shaped frame dwelling which contributes to the historic character of Quantico. The asymmetrical main elevation with its projecting two-story bay pavilion repeats a common architectural form for houses dating to the last decades of the nineteenth century.
Construction of this house was probably accomplished during the ownership of Henry Crawford and before his death in 1883, although another house stood on this lot during the third quarter of the nineteenth century. Designated on the 1877 Lake, Griffing, and Stevenson atlas map, a tailor's shop is located next to the structure identified as Henry Crawford's house. The architectural features of the extant house, however, suggest this may be a slightly later structure dating from 1880- 1900.
In his will, written in July 1868, Henry Crawford intended to leave his "house and lot in the village of Quantico...where I now reside" to his wife Margaret D. Crawford, and following her death to his daughters, Mary E. and Hetty Crawford. Fifteen years later, in March 1883, his will was probated following his death, and the house and lot passed his married daughter, Mary E. Jones. Mary E. Jones and her husband, Albert L. Jones, occupied the house until the mid 1930s when a default on the mortgage forced an auction of the property.
